Clearing snow from the ISS Dome, Düsseldorf

The ISS Dome, not far from Düsseldorf airport, is a state-of-the-art multi-functional hall that holds over 12,000 people. It opened in 2006 and attracts hundreds of thousands of people to concerts and events every year, and also hosts the home games of the Düsseldorfer EG ice hockey team.

The return of severe winter weather in January 2013 caused snow chaos throughout North Rhine-Westphalia. In the Düsseldorf Rheinland, over 15 cm of fresh snow fell in some areas so that the ISS dome was covered in snow. As part of a routine, planned measure within the overall traffic safety plan, preventative snow removal was carried out by means of a helicopter.

The removal of snow from roofs using a helicopter is an economical and fast solution that can be implemented for almost all roof structures. In addition, this internationally known method of snow removal, which is particularly widely used in the USA and Canada, makes it possible to remove the snow loads without endangering people.

The Sikorsky S-76 helicopter we used for this mission achieved almost complete snow removal due to its rotor downwash. During the mission, which lasted about an hour, the helicopter hovered just a few metres above the roof and spent several minutes hovering over the same spot. As this hovering is extremely demanding and requires the highest levels of concentration, we used a highly experienced pilot, as is usual with snow removal by helicopter. Through careful movements of the helicopter he was able to free the entire roof surface of snow in less than an hour.
